The beginning


Ive officially started my graphic design degree at OCA and Im so enthusiastic and eager to start, overall I consider myself to be a very creative person, I enjoy graphic design and art in my spare time, and even at a young age began to produce designs for other people, mainly small pieces such as youtube banners. From a young age this set off a spark, and from then I've wanted to progress my skills as much as possible. Starting this degree is the beginning of not only my career but the beginning of a path of self expression. Having something to work towards and complete will give me the opportunity I've been looking for to progress my skills and produce work I'm proud of. I want this course to further my understanding of graphic design and the skills required to be successful at it in the years to come

Importance of Critique

Self-critiquing is something that I need to improve on, it was only an issue once it was raised in this part of the course. Basically, I often will think I've finished a certain project and have it critiqued by either my dad or in this case my tutor. Deep down I know that there are faults with it but for some reason, these faults only truly come to light when someone else gives their critique. It's having that new perspective on work, you've been sat in front of that project for what could be hours, you then show it to someone new and they spot all the faults that you have been oblivious to, for me I think I spend too much time on one project, it often becomes a monotonous chore, as a budding designer I want to have fun with design, not get bored. I think that's where the main source of the problem arises. Exercise: Giving Information

For this exercise its all about information graphics and how they are specificily designed so that the information on them is easily identifiable and legible. Ive always loved the complexity of timetables and city maps. For example the london underground map is so complex but yet people can deciper the information because its displayed in an organized way. Also I also feel that a lot of the reason why things are readable is down to the choice of color, fonts and layout. These 3 things amongst others feed into it being a successful infographic.  I feel like the stand out feature for this infographic is the color choices, for starters the designer has chosen pastel colors which are innocent and gentle like the topic itself (babies). The second decision I think is the focus on illustrations, flat 2d illustrations like the ones here are almost considered icons. Exercise: Tattoo

For this exercise I was tasked with designing a tattoo for a someone and a greetings card, the tattoo was a gift for his mum and he also wanted to have a greetings card to go along with it. To begin with I browsed for some mum related tattoos just as a reference base. Once I had gathered those reference images, I used pro create to sketch out some ideas. I wanted to have something that was simple and geometric, I feel the trend of big coloured tattoos is gone now and I wanted something to reflect modern trends, especially with tattoos. The style of this tattoo caught my eye because it was basic and minimalist, I like the minimal line art and the fact it is not coloured. This reminded me of an old biker gang, I think big coloured tattoos like this are out of fashion, especially with banners.  I like the complexity of this tattoo, there is a lot of consideration into the overall style and message.
